Onion (Allium cepa) In Onion, antioxidants and sulfur containing amino-acid called S-methyl cysteine sulphoxide (SMCS) have been reported. These molecules have showed anti-hyperglycemic and hypolipidemic activities. Therefore, eating onion contributes in lowering the sugar level in blood.
 
Garlic (Allium sativum) In garlic, Allicin compound is found which is a sulfur containing compound and gives the pungent odor to the garlic. Interestingly, this compound has showed the significant hypo glycemic activity. Ayurveda praises garlic for correcting hepatic metabolism and increased level of insulin release from pancreatic beta cells of pancreas. The best way to get the benefit from garlic is to eat it raw by crushing or with lukewarm water. But in case, if you are not able to eat it raw due to its pungent smell then you can purchase garlic extract capsules from market. Furthermore, Allium sativum also shows cardio protective, antimicrobial, and anticancer activities.

Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis) Aloe is popularly known plant worldwide for its medicinal properties. The common use part of the plant is the gel, which is a leaf pulp. The other part used is latex which is a bitter yellow exudate. Both of them are highly effective in enhancing glucose tolerance. They also showed the hypoglycemic effects, induces insulin production, and exhibit the anti-inflammatory activity. Take leaf of the plant and cut the leaf in such way that you get maximum gel. Grind the gel to make a homogeneous juice. You can add some juice like Amla, oranges etc. into it to change the flavor. Drink one glass twice daily, before meal.

Neem (Azadirachta indica):Neem is a remarkable natural alternative to treat diabetes. The scientific studies reveal Neem for anti-hyperglycemic and anti-diabetic activities. Apart from them, Neem also has anti-bacterial, antifertility, antimalarial, hepatoprotective and antioxidant effects. Drink the juice of tender shoots of the leaves daily on empty stomach.

Jamun (Eugenia jambolana): It is also known as Indian gooseberry. In India, decoction of kernels of Jamun is used as a remedy for diabetes. It shows Anti-hyperglycemic effect, anti-diabetic properties, inhibitor of insulinase activity from liver and kidney. Eat daily 4-7 fruits of Jamun daily in the morning to control the blood sugar. You can make the powder of seeds and add 1 tablespoon in warm water/milk then drink.

Mango (Mangifera indica) The leaves of this plant are well known for anti-diabetic activity, and hypoglycemic activity. Soak 3-4 leaves in a bowel of water overnight. Filter the water and drink early morning on empty stomach Take few leaves, dry them in shadow place and grind to make powder. Take ½ tablespoon daily before lunch and dinner.

Bitter gourd (Momordica charantia): In India, it is called as Karela. It is well known and popular for antidiabetic and anti-hyperglycemic activities. The whole plant shows the hypoglycemic effect. The patients of diabetes must have bitter gourd in their kitchen. Take 4-5 fruits and peel them, crushed the peeled part and squeeze to take the extract of fruit. You can add little water in the juice and drink daily on empty stomach every morning.

Holy basil (Ocimum sanctum): It is commonly known as Tulsi and is well described in Ayurveda for its medicinal properties. The aqueous extract of leaves significantly reduces the blood sugar level and indicates the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects. Take two or three leaves as a whole or one tablespoon of juice daily on empty stomach.

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum) It is one of the major constituents of Indian spices. In fenugreek 4-hydroxyleucine is reported, which effectively stimulate the insulin hormone. Thereby, Fenugreek has effective role in treating diabetes.  Collect the fresh leaves of fenugreek, wash them and add in your regular recipes. Make the powder of seeds and boil one tablespoon of powder in one glass water, allow it cool and drink as a tea daily.

Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia) It is a deciduous climbing shrub, widely distributed throughout India. The roots are significant in reducing glucose level in blood and urine. Make fresh juice of the leaves and drink it on empty stomach. You can add honey to reduce the bitter taste.
